King's Cross Station: 240 LIMIT stanchions for London's busiest station

King's Cross is one of the busiest passenger stations in the United Kingdom, with flows that shift through the day and then arrive all at once in the minutes before each departure. The brief was the supply of 240 LIMIT retractable belt stanchions to organise those flows across the concourse and waiting areas.

The model installed was the LIMIT model, the base stanchion of the Dlimit collection, the brand’s premium range: stainless steel base 36 cm in diameter weighing 8 kg, a 3.7 m belt and a head certified for 200,000 cycles. These are laboratory figures, not marketing ones. In a space with constant traffic the base withstands lateral pull of up to 15 kg without tipping, which is the difference between a stanchion that stays where you put it and one that has to be repositioned every morning.

The belt was made to order with the wording “KING’S CROSS” printed in CMYK dye sublimation on the station's corporate blue. It is not a sticker or a screen print laid on top: the ink is bonded into the fibre, so the lettering neither wears away as the belt retracts nor fades under light. It is the same process we apply from the very first unit, with no tooling cost and no minimum run.

A belt stanchion does two things at once. It orders circulation, which is its job, and it repeats the identity of the space at eye level for everyone walking past. Two hundred and forty units carrying the same wording are two hundred and forty brand cues installed without taking up a single square metre more than the stanchion already occupied.
